UPAAH takes iconic “bahay kubo” to Filipino Fiesta

For the second time, UPAAH erected the iconic bahay kubo at Kakaako Park in Honolulu during the 2019 Filipino Fiesta.

Notwithstanding the early morning downpour, we managed to put up the traditional Filipino abode and relived the fun memories of rural Philippine life. A special addition to last year’s modest rural house were a couple of fighting cocks (without the metal spurs!) that often take the center stage in the weekend or fiesta pastime called sabong or tupada. Note: On March 14, 2020, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced that cockfighting is temporarily banned in the Philippines due to the prohibition of mass gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic and community quarantines across the Philippines.

And of course, fiesta is synonymous to lavish festive foods which we delightfully partook. Sadly, we all missed this year’s Filipino Fiesta which was cancelled due to the pandemic. We were then committed to feature Philippine modes of transportation, with the jeepney taking the center stage.

Maybe next year, we will be lucky to take a joyride!
