Dr. Susan Pineda Mercado

Dr. Mercado is a medical doctor and public health expert with more than 25 years of experience at international, national and local settings. She served with the World Health Organization for 15 years and retired as Director for Noncommunicable Disease and Health through the Life Course at the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office. She is internationally recognized for her work on tobacco control, health promotion, healthy cities and reproductive health. She has done humanitarian work as Deputy Secretary of the Philippine Red Cross and later as Strategic Adviser for COVID19 of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - Asia Pacific Regional Office - and is skilled in emergency preparedness and response. Dr. Mercado has also served the Philippine Government as Undersecretary and Chief of Staff of the Department of Health, Board Member- Expert Panel of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and was appointed as Special Envoy of the President for Global Health Initiatives, an honorary diplomatic designation that she has held for the past 3 years. Dr. Mercado has relocated to Hawaii with her family and is currently Director of Food Systems and Resiliency at the Hawaii Public Health Institute. She resides in Kapolei on O'ahu.
